If You Were Me

If you were me, today you would have:

1: Worn a purple shirt
2: Had a turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo sandwich for lunch
3: Seen a riveting show on Broadway which should have won the Tony for Best Musical but oddly, did not. It's called "The Light in The Piazza" and you would soon be recommending it to everyone you talk to
4: Bought a purple umbrella
5: Bought a new pair of shoes. On sale, even!
6: Bought a pair of orange socks. Also on sale!
7: Bought a ticket for "Swan Lake" so that Mom can see it with me! (She's coming to the City next week)
8: Made a joke to a cheese seller at dinner about the Monty Python Cheese Shop Sketch
9: Hit on a different waiter at the same dinner
10: Been interrupted from said dinner by two separate cellphone calls
11: Gone to the ballet and watched sexy men in tights do astonishing things with their legs. From all too far of a distance
12: Been frustrated by the fact that although you have two tickets for a different Broadway show for tomorrow evening, all your friends (and even mere acquaintances, and a cyberperson or two whom I have not yet even met) are all busy
13: Added a bunch of things to this list so many times that you started to regret numbering it in the first place
14: Posted the following photograph to your blog:

And then you would ask the beloved readership of your blog the following question, even though you think you already have a good idea about the answer to said question:

Given the color scheme of the knit part, and the colors of the fabric lining part, and the fact that the blankie is for a baby girl, which of the three balls of yarn at top would you use to knit the border? The Funky Pink on the left, the warm yellow in the center or the Salmon Pink on the right?

Or would you just use the pastel pink in the next picture?

Definitely the pastel pink. I think the other three are so dominant that they will distort the little bricks of colour and anyway, it's for a baby, for goodness' sake, and babies suit pastels. BTW, the search box on your blog isn't working; it links to knittersagainstbush.

Hope you get the blankie finished in time :)

Hi Jon, been reading your blog for awhile and am coming out of lurkdom to comment on the (beautiful!) blankie. I say the "pink on the right". When my daughter was born I got so much pastel pink stuff it was a little nausiating! I think the light pink would be overwhelmed by the dark squares in the blanket. Of course if the parents are the "light pink for little girls" type, I'd say go with that instead (obviously I wasn't that type!)

I too think the darker salmon color is a good choice. It will anchor all the other colors of the knitwork together as well as draw out the similar colors in the fabric lining. The fabric already has so much light pink that more could look funny. I also like darker borders because they will show dirt less. But it could be hard to tell based only on these blog pictures. Either way, I love the blanket and your blog...keep up the good work!

Oh, yeah, pink on right. And good on you for the Monty Python joke.

Posted by: Rachael at June 30, 2005 09:41 AM

Yup, the darker pink. Or the purple. Holy crap, I love that lining. If this girl doesn't cherish that blanket and take it with her to college, I'm going to find her and knock some sense into her head.

Hi- another lurker coming out of hiding to say go with the Salmon. Definitely. Ties the whole thing together.

Your work is great - and that fabric is too much fun!

Seems I'm alone in my choice...yellow! It picks up the yellow from the lining and marries the lining to the front.

Posted by: sean at June 30, 2005 10:09 AM

I like the funky pink. It's a bland, happy medium.

Another lurker here (who is LOVING this blanket!) - I actually like the pink on the left. It's the medium-est of all the choices, and will neither overwhelm the color blocks (like the salmon might) nor fade into nothingness (like the pastel pink might). The yellow is my second choice.

I can't wait to see how this looks when it's finished. Beautiful.

i knew this was not going to be a popular choice but i vote YELLOW! i think it'll give you a nice contrasting frame in that there's a lot of pinks in the blanket. i'm a radical.

Posted by: mark at June 30, 2005 10:44 AM

I vote yellow. It's a nice contrast from the pink background in the lining.

Posted by: Ann at June 30, 2005 10:52 AM

I'm with Sean, Mark, and Ann ... YELLOW. It's unobtrusive and shows off your work very well. YELLOW. YELLOW. YELLOW!! :)

Posted by: Erin at June 30, 2005 11:49 AM

Um, I started by thinking the yellow, but the medium pink would also be good. The yellow probably would look more neutral.

Jon-

I also vote for the Salmon pink. Looks great and I am sure would also look swell as a shawl with your purple shirt, umbrella and orange socks. Such a colorful man.

I love the brighter pink, but if you used the yellow and this little baby turned out to be a boy the blanket would still work.

Posted by: Kelly O at June 30, 2005 01:27 PM

I vote for the darker pink on the right. The yellow is nice, but I think the pink makes the yellow pop a little more that the yellow makes the pink pop.

Posted by: Jenn at June 30, 2005 01:34 PM

I like the darker pink, because it ties together the colors in the blanket and the fabric.

Posted by: Diana at June 30, 2005 02:47 PM

I vote for the darker, salmon pink on the right. I think the darker color anchors all of the other colors in the blanket. The lighter colors wash out with the bolder colors in many of the squares.

Posted by: Doug at June 30, 2005 06:34 PM

Pink on the right. Absolutely.

Posted by: Cari at June 30, 2005 07:29 PM

I am also a first time, but second try commenter! I lost everything last time I tried to post because I failed to enter the e-mail address! I think yellow is definitely the best choice. Baby girls always get so much pink. Yellow is warm, cheery, and ties the whole blanket together...and its not too pale either!:)

There was a great deal of purple going on with you today. Orange socks, where is the picture of those? Actually after reading the list, I wish I were you today.

I'd choose the yellow. It's one of the more under-represented colors in the rainbow. Of course, I really think you should consider some other color. ;-) The blankie is fabulous! The little girl is very lucky to have you in her life!

Posted by: Phyl at June 30, 2005 08:46 PM

Salmon. A man who wore a purple shirt and bought orange socks and a purple umbrella makes bold statements. Though if it's wider than an inch, I'd go for yellow.

Posted by: MarQ1 at June 30, 2005 09:06 PM

salmon pink definitely........

Posted by: cheryl at July 5, 2005 10:16 PM

Ah there's the fabric. I LOVE it! I'd go with salmon. Pink is so cliche for a baby girl - salmon is more unexpected. Plus I think it goes well with the colorways of Rosetta.
