Hear Ye...Hear Ye...
I declare this the official announcement of The Cactus Wedding Tour, my upcoming sojourn across the country, part vacation (my first in forever) and part family wedding.
I will be making my first trip to Tucson, Arizona to visit my friend Kevin, who has visited me in New York several times and promises to show me all the glamourous high life that Tucson has to offer. We may even go across the border to Mexico, which would be another first for me. I have made him promise to show me a cactus, a lizard, and a tumbleweed, if nothing else. :)
Any bloggers out there from Tucson?
From Tucson, I head to Huntsville, Alabama for the wedding of my younger brother. Brother Man is marrying a very nice girl and I'm very happy for them despite the fact that they have known each other less than a year. I was not thrilled that they chose to marry in a place that is relatively challenging (and expensive) to get to, but they work for airlines so the cost of travel is not their top concern.
He has also just be promoted to Captain, which means that he could be the pilot in charge of your next US Airways Express regional jet flight. The problem is that he moved from being a Junior Officer (I can't remember the official title) with much seniority to being a Captain with little or none. Which means that the honeymoon plans may not happen if he has to work now. We'll see.
After a weekend in Huntsville with no open bar, I head home to New York. I found a rather extrordinary deal tonight on-line courtesy of Orbitz that is allowing me to fly the whole Cactus Wedding Tour for less than $400, something that will be a huge help to my finances this fall. Of course, I'm utilizing something like 4 different airlines at various points in the trip, but who cares? I could have booked the trip all on one airline (my first choice), but paid at least $100 more for the privledge. Not worth it.
The Tour commences in about 34 days. Let the rejoicing begin!
Have fun. And if you have too much fun. We want pictures.

I visited Tucson many times during the summer as a teenager. My cousin was stationed at Davis AFB there. We would drive down to Nogales, Mexico and go to a restaurant called La Caverna - It is in a cave that was once a jail, but amazingly elegant. The only place I've ever been given a finger bowl. Way back then it had great food and low prices and a very different atmosphere. I'd love to know if it is still there.
Have fun! Be careful in Alabama. It can be a little scary.

Allen, you're a mind reader. Just last night when I was confirming my plans with Kevin, he was raving about La Caverna and making plans to take me there. Apparently, it's still there and still good. I'll be sure to let you know.
